Made in Germany | Logistics Center Leipzig – Global Gateway

By admin | November 3, 2008

Economic forecasts for 2009 in Europe and the US are far from rosy. And they’re not much better for the once flourishing logistics industry. MADE in GERMANY went to Leipzig to look round one of Europe’s biggest air freight centers.

Sited on the airfield on the outskirts of the city, the DHL freight center cost 300 million euros and growth is expected to continue until 2012. More than 2,000 employees work through the night, loading and unloading planes that take off and land every minute.
They sort at least 1,500 tonnes of freight every night, both by hand and with the aid of the biggest and most modern sorting equipment in Germany. By 5 AM, their work is finished and Leipzig’s air freight center is silent for another day. Report by Grit Hoffmann.
